Sara was broken, bruised, and tormented by her ex, who also turned her into a werewolf, and kept her abused and subdued for so long. Scared of her own animal side, unable to even be in werewolf presence without wanting to flee and vomit. And her abuse was not just physical, it was every kind you can think of. She felt real, and you got very invested in her future happiness wanting her to have everything life had denied her. She was trying so hard to be strong and independent, trying to suppress her terrified self. Her journey was touching.

Ramsey a virgin bear that had never had a mate, girlfriend or anything of the sort. Kicked out of his bear clan just for making friends with a were-cougar he was solitary, strong, sturdy, dependable and patient. He was the opposite of Sara in every way. But he used his strength to bolster her, submitting in a way that made them equals more than one lording over the other. Letting her take the lead and helping her realize her true strength. He was by far my favorite male lead ever.

The plot was awesome. It had romance, it had a bit of fighting over the girl and from the girl. It had a message about tolerance and accepting others no matter their differences. I loved it. It flowed smoothly without jumps or dips.

Overall a fantastic read and has my new favorite line ever-- "That is the sweetest, and bloodiest, thing anyone has ever said to me." And despite how it sounds the moment is incredibly sweet (and so amusing I laughed loud enough that everyone in the house looked at me like I had lost my mind). I loved book 1 but this one beats even that.

Desperately Seeking Shapeshifter Jessica Sims 9781451661811 Books Reviews

The heroine is a turned (rather than born) werewolf and she starts off as timid/hiding behind her sister type, due to a horrible, violent experience with a past boyfriend, but during the story she grows and when she comes into her own, it was a very cool scene (don't want to say anymore as would be a spoiler). The hero is an alpha but he's not all smooth moves - he lives in a house that should be condemned but then he quickly turns it around to make it a better place for the h and he is not an experienced sex god but is incredibly sensitive. I appreciate that this departure from the usual PNR of helpless female and all knowing/powerful male - this story felt much stronger and unique as a result. The slower way the relationship developed was nice and believable as opposed to instant seduction/capitulation that one often reads with PNR.

Some minor nits there was an editing issue where sometimes the character Levi was referred to as Connor's father and other times as his uncle. It would have been good if it was explained why Connor was a good egg despite the rest of the pack being lowlifes. Also, would have liked to have heard more of Savannah's viewpoint as to why she rejected Connor.

I agree with another reviewer that this book is better than book 1.
Okay, let me just say that Sara's initial meeting with the wolf pack was EMBARRASSING! I was so embarrassed for her because no one knew that she couldn't control her painful shift, so let's just say doing it in front of a group of people who all know how to shift smoothly is awkward. This book was actually one that was hard to put down and I was very surprised by that. After reading the first book which was just mediocre, I expected the same. I love the big silent type and Ramsey definitely fits the bill. Sara and Ramsey's characters are so opposite but they complement each other. Sara had a very abusive past with a wolf and has to learn to become stronger and not let it get in her path to acceptance and love. Ramsey is very patient, caring and protective of her and this gives her purpose. We meet a couple of characters in this book, one of which is Connor (who is in love with Savannah). He comes off whiny and not strong enough to stand up for what he wants. I felt I would not be interested in his story at all, but that all changed for the better by the end of the book (I won't give it away). So needless to say I hope they have a story in the future.
This is a second book in the series and could easily be read as a stand alone. Paranormal romance which means it’s usually going to be a hit or miss. It had some unique qualities I had yet to see in the various books I’d read. But the author took those qualities to the extreme.

Sarah as had sex before, but the way I understood it, it was abuse. So right off the bat I’m not understanding her reactions to sex with the main male lead (Ramsey). Ramsey is huge, hulking, terrifying and basically a teddy bear (haha he’s a bear shifter haha you see what the author did there? Hehe… *sigh*) and he's pretending to be her mate for the book to save her from a wolf pack. She begins to like Ramsey and fall in love with him the usual thing. But in all accounts she should still be traumatized by the idea of sex or... something more than just "Ok I'm over my fear with you, I think I like you, I definitely lust after you, stick it in me!" That jarred me and made me shake my head. It felt like there should have been more conflict in that area.

Now the unique things in this book that did grasp my attention.
A Female lead who has had a seriously abusive past overcomes this problem in the end - or at least starts on it. She also finds her strength through love and when all is said and done she takes that strength and saves instead of being the one needing saving (being the typical damsel in distress). I admit the entire book had me wound up and ready for you typical, average "Help I'm kidnapped" scene.

The second thing that had me smiling that was out of the ordinary was that the main male was a virgin and totally inexperienced in just about every way when it came to sex and foreplay.
But in the end it really seemed like the author was trying hard to break out of the stereotypes, and threw a lot of them into one book. I think it would have read better and been more believable and realistic if she'd had a balance going on (of course this ties in with my feelings that Sarah probably shouldn't have been so gung-ho for intimate times.) So for me it hangs on that one key detail - Sarah wasn't afraid of sex when she got to know Ramsey.

In real life You can love someone and still be afraid of sex with them due to past abuse. Ramsey being experienced and helping Sarah through her fears about sex would have been much more beilievble and satisfying, I think.
