The book itself was pretty boring. Plan, run, capture, someone's dead, oh wait no they're not, plan some more, travel. I also felt like the villains weren't really a part of the plot; I never really felt the danger from the main villains, and both the Skeleton King and Tohon felt like afterthoughts. *Mini Spoilers* We just meet the Skeleton King and his dastardly army and then he's dispatched. Tohon shows up at the very end, and the entire finale was incredibly anti-climatic. The epilogue or ending chapter was terrible. I felt like they're were so many loose ends that she just dealt with in a couple of unsatisfactory sentences. As I kept reading this, I just kept thinking what an incredibly selfish person Avery was. She just kept running off to do her own thing and getting angry at the one person trying to save the realms who wasn't a complete psychopath, because he had the "bigger picture" in mind when he was dealing with her. Sorry Avery, you're not the center of the universe, and everything can't go your way. Literally, the entire book was spent with her just being like "well, I don't feel like doing that, so I'm going to leave even though people need me". Not cool.
Word Choice: Leered
Snyder kept using this to describe the interactions of hero and heroine. When I think of the word "leered" I think of unsavory characters and unsavory looks. Looks that are unwelcome, disgusting, and unnerving. But she kept using this over and over again to describe how they looked at each other. No. Just no. Poor word choice.

Taste Of Darkness The Healer Series Book 3 eBook Maria V Snyder Reviews
I actually finished this book a couple of weeks ago and am just now clarifying my feelings on it. On one hand, I loved the interaction of the key characters I've grown to love, but on the other, there were a few things that bugged me so much I needed time to think whether or not I truly enjoyed it. So here's what I thought, and take it from the point of view of someone who truly loves Snyder's writing and stories.
The story picks up with Avry and Kerrick still in battle against evil in several forms, but mostly against Tohon. It doesn't take long for the pair to become separated again, however, and that's a problem in more than one way. Avry has to decide how she can best serve the battle and that means continuing on after she's searched for Kerrick; Kerrick, meanwhile, has the forest to thank for his healing but it's got a very large condition...he can no longer leave without severe consequences. By the time the two meet up again, there's been a shift in who is the most evil with the Skeleton King pretty much taking the crown for that dubious title. There's more travel, a friend or two is found, and there is torture and illness. It's not really a lot of fun, but it makes sense as far as the storyline goes.
I found the bits with the well-documented torture to be the hardest to read and almost stomach-turning at times. That's not a huge deal, however, because there is indeed a war going on. I suppose my biggest issue is with the ending, so read no further if you want to avoid spoilerage.
I just felt that too much was left hanging. Sure, the main two bad guys were taken down, but what about Cellina? Is she going to remain a threat or will she fade off into the sunset as was implied? I also didn't like not seeing the resolution to Kerrick's situation, even if Avry did explain it. I also felt deprived of the actual scene where Avry emerges from the Lily. In truth, most of the ending felt rushed and not well-tied up. Maybe there's another book coming? It's really hard to tell, though it *seemed* as though it was the final in the trilogy.
But there's still a lot to love, including the monkeys, the relationships, and the fighting. I simply love saying "Thank the Flea!" now, and overall, I suppose I'm satisfied. I'd actually give this one a 3.5, but my enjoyment of the series rounds it up to 4.
I liked this book the least out of the three in this trilogy. My major issue was that there were dramatic things happening, but overall it lacked the suspense of the other books. The pages just didn’t fly by as fast as the previous two books. I did find Kerrick's connection to the forest very intriguing. I liked how he was the forest and the added drama with his body trying to go dormant with the forest. The Skeleton King was a nice scary twist. I feel like all of the bad guys got decapitated. I liked how once again Avry was using her quick mind and healing ability to cure the sick. Strange enough, I think my biggest problem was with the cover art. There was nothing wrong with the girl or her pose holding the lily aloft. I really just felt like I could have gone out and bought her v neck black tee, khaki pants, and studded belt at Target. Normally that wouldn't be a problem for me, but in a fantasy book I think it just takes away from the plausibility of the world the author created when the clothes on the cover don't look outside of our current time and place. Avry wasn't wearing anything like what's on the cover art when I imagined the story in my mind. Overall still a good book. Still worth the read to complete an otherwise excellent series, but this book just didn't draw me in as thoroughly as the first two.
