I could hardly wait to turn the page to see what would happen next. When I finished this book, I started the next one as soon as possible.
Delightful story with strong and real characters who make mistakes but are able to look inside themselves and see what is important.
The Duke, Drake Weston, is heir to wealth and power. Drake makes a great mistake and must leave everything he has behind and flee for his life. Not only has he to leave his home but he must leave England. Under a false name he slips boards a ship of slaves that is headed to America. When the ship arrives to America, the ship has sick people on it.
Serena Winter, who is a Quaker, helps tend to the sick when the ships arrive in the harbor. She helps save the life of Drake, but finds that there is a lot of anger and hostility in this mans life. See sees that there is good in this man and tries to help at what cost.
I chose this rating because it was such a heartwarming and inspirational read. It gives hope for life-changing possibilities through Christ.
I enjoyed reading the crazy twists and turns that happened in this wonderful story. This is a clean read. I will definitely be reading this book again soon!!
Not sure why all the bad reviews. They seem very motivated to tear down this author. Anyway, I really enjoyed this book. It is my favorite of hers yet, and yes I do own all her books. I am looking forward to her Duke series, but I am just waiting until they are all available to read. I thought this story was beautiful. I loved the romance of the two main characters and held my breath for their happily ever after. There were some things in the book that surprised me, but I enjoyed the book all the more for that. I have read this book in a day and have gone back to reread it many times. I read a lot of books, so unless they have a story that stands out I often times do not remember the plot. Not this one. Even though I first read this a few years ago, I can still remember this beautiful love story. Thanks Jamie for writing one of my favorite books.
A Jamie Carie book is always a well-written book, and The Duchess and the Dragon was no exception. Carie is a master of descriptive language, and the reader is transported to another day and time, and entirely engulfed by the happenings of her story. Her books always carry a nugget of science or history which I have enjoyed and come to anticipate. I found all the characters of the story fleshed out quite well. Though some have said the main ones were unbelievable, I think the contrast of Serena and Drake's totally opposite worlds of upper British nobility and American colonial Quaker was quite a jump in itself, but it was very well handled by the author. Drake was not the ordinary inspirational romance hero, and the term transformational fiction comes into play at its finest in describing the story and plot development. To some, the basic premise of the plot and Drake's scheme to overcome being disinherited may be on the surface a little troubling, but my understanding is that not all grants of British peerage are written the same, so there is a possibility that title and lands could have been controlled by a will. In any case, I was more than blessed by this excellent story, and I highly recommend this book to those who enjoy this time period as it happened on both sides of the water. Go for it--you won't be disappointed!
