I started this mystery with fairly high hopes that were quickly dashed by the uneven nature of the narrative and the bizarre behavior of Liv, the main character.

When a local woman is founded dead during a major biker rally, two suspects emerge -- Jens (her boyfriend) and Mully (the president of a visiting motorcycle club). Jens asks his sister, Liv, to help clear his name -- apparently because she has played detective once before (this is the second book in the series). I wouldn't ask my sister to get involved in the investigation of a violent crime, I'd hire a professional. But such considerations don't seem to bother Jens much. The story alternates between Liv's first person narration and thirty-party narration from other characters. This choice was distracting and, I felt, threw away one of the main advantages of first-person narration in a mystery -- that is, we don't experience the story only from Liv's POV and have access only to the information that she has. The third-party scenes don't improve the story at all, in my opinion. They mostly serve as an opportunity for the author to shower us with the details about biker culture.

Liv is not a good investigator. This isn't an absolute prerequisite for a good mystery series, especially one that seems to attempt to straddle the cozy/gritty line, as this one does. But I don't get the sense that the author is aware of how bizarre and unintelligent some of Liv's decisions truly are. For example, she decides to photograph the death of a local woman, but doesn't share this information with the police. Why? Because she's afraid of the bikers? But when she realizes the bikers know she witnessed it, then why doesn't she give all her information to the police then? At another point, she sends some information anonymously to the poiice . . . from her work email address. Just . . . why? If Liv was presented as some sort of inept bumbler who stumbled on the truth, this might work -- but I don't think the author was going for comedy, given the raves that she receives from the FBI agents who were also working the case. I think we're supposed to think that she really is something.

At the end of the book, Liv is given a highly trained dog and basically invited to join the FBI. This can't be how it works. I spent so much time shaking my head at Liv's inept approach to solving the mystery (and the mystery wasn't really all that much).

Do not recommend.

This is the first book from this author I read. I quit reading
after several chapters.

The writing is awkward, especially the male characters' speech (the author doesn't capture well at all how men think and talk).

There are too many abrupt jumps between chapters in time, place, and setting, leaving me confused.

Actually most of the action of the males are somewhat weird and artificial.

It's easy to find considerably better writing for free or cheap on the . I shall not waste further time with this.
Overall it was an ok read but I'm glad it was free. Not sure if I should have read the first book to fully understand the storyline. Some aspects seemed confusing and underdeveloped. One character claims to be a suspect but the person in charge keeps trying to put the suspicion on someone else. Liv seemed to be in the right place at the right time too often (or wrong place/wrong time depending on your view). She seems very reluctant to talk to the police in the beginning which I didn't understand. Her dad is a congressman but doesn't seem to play any part in trying to find the killer of his son's girlfriend. And after the way we were introduced to Mully earning purple wings it's hard to like the character as the author seems to want us to. Maybe future installments will get better.
It took me two tries to get interested enough to finish this book. While the writing was not bad there were just too many odd things going on that it was a difficult book to enjoy.

It was clear that the author did not do her homework about motorcycle gangs. For example while she knows about colors she continued to refer to black leather jackets while most biker gangs wear denim jackets or vests.

I also found the incident where Liv photographed the death of a young woman and didn't report it until days later to be unbelievable. And then she refused to give her name but sent the information using her work email? I didn't get it.

When the wife of one character states that the man who has been molesting and raping girls as young as 13 was impotent I was just flabberghasted. Surely the author knows the difference between being sterile or non-fertile (unable to bear or father children) and being impotent (unable to perform the sex act).

Finally, I found the introduction of a dog into the final pages to be bewildering at best. The dog was suppose to be specially trained by the FBI for tracking, trailing etc. and an agent just gave the dog away? It was never explained how the agent obtained ownership of the dog and supposedly the dog belonged to Liv's best friend but Liv had never seen the dog? Very strange.
While I enjoyed the 1st in the series, this book was just a bit too gruesome/realistic to me. Liv goes it on her own again to help solve the mystery and I found her to be "dense" this go round while the first novel showed Liv as savvy and shrewd. No, Liv was out on a limb most of the book, not wanting, taking or asking for help. Would someone really "forget" to take the gun they dropped with them? No, I don't think so. If I saw an evil motorcycle gang coming up to my house, I'd do more than run out the back since I had the authorities on the phone.

While Brannan leads us down the path of thinking the 1st "death/murder" will be the missing younger sister this isn't the case as the plot continues to develop.

In the 2nd of the series, Brannan is too graphic for my tastes and I didn't care for the motorcycle theme especially since they weren't the "culprits" so to speak.

Yes, Liv and Streeter eventually meet even though it should have been much sooner and yes, there is the romance already working for them in the next installment, but it's not enough for me to invest the time it takes to get through Brannan's work. Her books are a bit long and over-done while don't leave the satisfaction intended.
